David Sacks: If Dario Got His Way on AI Regulation, It Would Destroy Anthropic
You want this in the voice of George Carlin? Fine. Here’s a Carlin-flavored take, punching up the nonsense and calling out the ritual of social-media worship without mercy:
Okay, folks, here’s the sacred gospel of “Follow the besties.” You know the drill: clickety-click, follow, pretend you’re part of the inner circle, because nothing says freedom like a curated feed from people who tweet their breakfast and call it wisdom. It’s a parade of high priests with blue checkmarks, waving their holy hand-signals from the sanctified screens. Follow the besties, and somehow you’re supposed to believe you’ve joined the revolution. No, buddy, you joined a subscriber list for a worldview with better lighting.
Then there’s the grand pilgrimage to X, that digital town square where we argue with avatars and pretend the likes are actual human praise. “Follow on X,” they say, as if on X there’s some moral gravity to your every retweet. It’s a machine for validating your ego, one perfectly angled post at a time. And the Instagram ritual—oh, the Instagram ritual—where we stage-manage reality so tightly you’d think the truth comes with a filter and a caption. Selfies as self-actualization; you’re not alive, you’re algorithmically optimized.
TikTok, LinkedIn, the holy triad of career advancement, life-aspiration, and personal branding. A place where your resume has a face, your mind has a soundbite, and your expensive gadgetry has somehow become your personality. LinkedIn—because nothing says “human connection” like a professional network that’s basically a digital handshake with a resume attached to it.
Intro music credit, intro video credit, ya-da-ya-da. It’s all credits, folks. Credits for the mood, credits for the mood-setter, credits for the mood-setter’s mood-setter. We’re watching a late-capitalist stage show where art is a product, and the producer is a keyboard.
So here’s the bottom line, from the mouth of the man who loves to point out the absurd: Follow this, subscribe to that, watch this clip, like that post, rinse, repeat, and call it “news.” It’s the entire culture, packaged in a feed, narrated by the loudest few, consumed by the rest of us who forgot how to think without a notification.
